Spring is in the air and it’s time to jump into the vibrant world of flowers with a variety of hands-on activities perfect for preschoolers. Young children can explore and learn through interactive play with these engaging flower-themed activities. Of course getting dirty and planting flowers outside is the best way to learn about flowers, here are some fun classroom activities to do as well.
Counting Flower Gems
Counting is made for exciting with these fun flower-shaped gems. You can find these at the Dollar Tree or Amazon and the math printables are in my TPT store! What a fun way to strengthen early numeracy skills!
Flower Color Experiment
Discover the magic of colors with a flower color experiment! Watch as flowers change color when placed in different colored water. Have the students guess what is going to happen to the flowers. Encourage observation and critical thinking and ask questions about what happened and why. Students can also draw a picture of what they see.
Flower Morning Meeting Questions
Incorporate this fun activity into your morning meeting! Flower-shaped questions are a great way to get to know each person in your class. The teacher can ask or older children can ask each other the questions. Print them out and glue them on craft sticks and stick them in a flower pot for display!
Flower Fine Motor Mats
Combine letter recognition activities with fine motor skills practice with flower-themed mats! Children can use playdough, craft poms or other small objects to put on the mats. Use tweezers for even more fine motor strengthening. Laminate the mats and use a dry-erase marker to trace the letters.
Sensory Bin
Create a sensory bin filled with dried black beans and fake flowers. Add some toy garden tools for a fun sensory experience!
Flower Pattern Bracelets
Engage your students in creating pattern bracelets using fun and colorful flower beads! Help them explore different patterns such as AB, ABC, or AABB while strengthening their fine motor skills.
Cutting Stems
Develop fine motor skills by cutting flower stems with child-safe scissors. This activity promotes hand strength and coordination and is a fun way to explore flowers!
Painting with Flowers
Engage in artistic expression by painting with flowers. Use flowers as paintbrushes to create unique and colorful artwork, fostering creativity and imagination.
Flower Collage
Collaborate on a flower collage project. Let children arrange and glue flower cut-outs onto paper to create a beautiful masterpiece, encouraging artistic exploration. Cut colorful flower pictures out of magazines to create a paper garden.
Activities with Math Manipulatives
Utilize math manipulatives like pattern blocks, links, unifix cubes, clothespins, etc with flower printouts to practice counting, sorting, and simple math operations in a hands-on way.
Fine Motor Flower Activity
Pretend to make a floral arrangement and practice fine motor skills with this fun activity! All you need is a colander and some fake flowers, I got all of this at the Dollar Tree. Cut the bunches of flowers into single flowers and trim them to fit in the colander better. Make sure there are no sharp ends from the cut wires. Students can have fun fine motor skills while creating a beautiful arrangement!
Have fun exploring and learning with flowers in the preschool classroom!
