Sensory bins are an excellent tool for learning and development. They provide students with opportunities to:
- Develop Fine Motor Skills: By scooping, pouring, and sorting materials, children refine hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
- Stimulate the Senses: Sensory bins engage the sense of touch, sight, and sometimes smell, creating a multi-sensory learning experience.
- Enhance Cognitive Skills: Sorting, categorizing, and discovering hidden objects encourage problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Support Emotional Regulation: The calm, repetitive actions in a sensory bin can help children focus and relax.

Materials:
- Chickpeas: Dry chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
- Non-Toxic Acrylic Paint: Choose a variety of colors to create your rainbow effect (or use any other colors that fit your theme).
- Ziploc Bags: One for each color of paint/chickpeas you plan to use.
- Plastic Bin: For your sensory bin setup.
- Scoops, Spoons, Containers: For added interaction and exploration with the chickpeas.
- Optional Extras: Glitter, small toys, or sensory items like pom-poms for more texture and fun.
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Chickpeas for Painting
First, ensure the chickpeas are dry and ready to be colored. You’ll need enough chickpeas to fill your bin, but don’t worry about measuring exactly. A good rule of thumb is about 1-2 cups of chickpeas per color.
2. Color the Chickpeas with Acrylic Paint
- Add Paint to the Bag: Squeeze a generous amount of acrylic paint (a few tablespoons should do) into a Ziploc bag. The more paint you use, the more intense the color will be.
- Add Chickpeas: Pour a portion of the dry chickpeas into the bag with the paint. Seal the bag tightly.
- Shake: Have students (or you) shake the bag to coat the chickpeas evenly with the paint. You can add a few drops of water to the bag to help the paint spread more smoothly if it feels too thick.
- Dry the Chickpeas: Lay the painted chickpeas out on a tray or baking sheet to dry. Acrylic paint dries fairly quickly, but allow a few hours for the chickpeas to fully set.
3. Create the Rainbow Sensory Bin
Once your chickpeas are dry, it’s time to set up the sensory bin:
- Arrange the Colors: Pour the chickpeas into a large plastic bin, arranging the colors in a rainbow pattern for a visually stunning effect. You can also mix the colors for a more vibrant, multicolored experience.
- Add Sensory Tools: Include spoons, scoops, and small containers for students to use for sorting, transferring, or measuring chickpeas.
- Optional Extras: Add small hidden toys, glitter, pom-poms, or fabric swatches to give children more to explore.
4. Incorporate Learning Activities
- Color Sorting: Have students sort the chickpeas by color, reinforcing their understanding of color recognition.
- Counting and Math: Challenge students to count the number of chickpeas in each color section or create patterns and sequences.
- Sensory Exploration: Encourage students to describe the texture of the chickpeas as they scoop and pour them, enhancing their vocabulary and sensory awareness.
- Hidden Object Search: Hide small toys or alphabet letters in the chickpeas for students to find.
5. Clean-Up
To make clean-up easier, consider using a plastic mat or tablecloth under the sensory bin. The chickpeas are light, and sometimes they can scatter, so having a designated area for clean-up can help. You can involve the children in the process, teaching them about responsibility as they help scoop the chickpeas back into the bin.
